Choosing a publisher

Choosing a publishing partner is one of the most important aspects of the self-publishing process. There are perhaps no entirely right answers as to which route to take towards getting published, but there are definitely wrong answers. It would almost always be wrong, for instance, to choose a publishing partner who charged a very large amount of money simply to print hundreds of copies of your book which you then had to store and try to distribute. This type of publishing is usually called 'Vanity Publishing' since it leaves the author with a sense of having published a book, but it also leaves the author with the problem of how, if ever, any of the stock of books will be disposed of.

Ideally, the self publishing author should be able to pay for whatever services might be required to help publish their volume, including a number of copies of their book, and should then be able to obtain additional copies at a very low, discounted rate.

The choice to self publish should not penalise the author by requiring the purchase of large quantities of stock, indeed the best partners will provide a means of allowing small quantities to be purchased, and even for Print On Demand processes to be offered so that customers purchase the book themselves and have it delivered directly to them.

An author should make sure that all of the costs associated with publishing their manuscript are clearly listed, and that the contract does not allow for unexpected extra costs to prevent publication. The publishing partner should take only a small deposit and then provide detailed costs after seeing the manuscript and describing the process required to publish it.
